How to Support Military Families During a Government Shutdown

Michelle Penczak • October 8, 2025

hen the government shuts down, the headlines talk about politics. What they don’t talk about are the families sitting at kitchen tables across military housing neighborhoods, doing math that doesn’t add up.

I’ve lived this life. My husband’s paycheck, the one we depend on for groceries, rent, and everything in between, is suddenly paused because Congress can’t agree. And like so many military spouses, I’ve stared at the calendar wondering how we’re supposed to cover the gap between duty and dollars.

But here’s the thing about military families: we don’t stop showing up.

We still make school drop-offs, prep deployment care packages, and run the household solo while our partners serve. We do it with quiet strength, but that doesn’t mean we don’t feel the strain.

So let’s talk about what a government shutdown really means for military families and how you can help.

What Happens When the Government Shuts Down

A government shutdown means federal funding lapses, and while active-duty military members are required to report for duty, their pay can be delayed. Civilian employees working on base or in support roles may be furloughed.

For many families, that can mean missed rent payments, late bills, or even choosing between gas and groceries.

And because military families often move every few years, many don’t have local support networks or a second steady income to rely on. The stress compounds fast.

How You Can Help Military Families

If you’re wondering how to make a real impact, here are a few ways:

  • Donate to relief funds – Organizations like the Armed Services YMCA and Operation Homefront provide emergency financial assistance to families impacted by pay delays.
  • Support military spouse–owned businesses – Many spouses, like those in our Squared Away community, run businesses or freelance to keep their families afloat. Every purchase from them goes directly toward stability and independence.
  • Advocate for consistent military pay – Call your representatives. Remind them that military families shouldn’t be political collateral. Our service members deserve better than uncertainty.
  • Offer community help – If you live near a base, small gestures matter. Offer childcare swaps, share meals, or simply check in on your neighbors. Connection is often the greatest relief.

Where Squared Away Fits In

At Squared Away, our mission has always been rooted in this truth: military spouses deserve stability, opportunity, and respect.

We’ve built a company that hires, trains, and champions military spouses, not as charity, but as exceptional professionals who thrive in chaos and lead with resilience.

When shutdowns hit, our assistants don’t lose income. They keep their clients’ businesses running, they keep serving, and they keep proving that flexibility is power.

Every client who hires through Squared Away isn’t just getting a world-class assistant. They’re investing in a family’s peace of mind when the world feels uncertain.

Final Thoughts

Government shutdowns remind us of something we already know too well: systems can fail, but communities can’t.

If you’ve ever said “thank you for your service,” this is your chance to show it by supporting the families behind the uniform.

Whether that’s donating, hiring through Squared Away, or simply sharing this message, your action matters.

Because when paychecks pause, military families keep serving. And we’ll keep standing behind them.
